RandomCon 2009, the first annual regional gaming convention held in the Phoenix metropolitan area over Mothers' Day Weekend, included several Shadowfist events.

Friday the 08th May 2009 @ 10:00 hours
Shadowfist Demonstration
In our first slot I ran one two player demo for new player Bryan C. and I.  He seemed to enjoy the game quite a bit.

Friday the 08th May 2009 @ 11:00 hours
Shadowfist Demonstration
Bryan C. stuck around and played a two player demo with new player Greg M.  Both seemed to enjoy the game.

Friday the 08th May 2009 @ 12:00 hours
Shadowfist Demonstration
Bryan C. and Greg M. stuck around and played a three player demo with me.  The two definitely enjoy this game and will probably play again.

Friday the 08th May 2009 @ 1300 hours
Shadowfist Demonstration
Bryan C. had to leave for another game he had scheduled, but Greg M stuck around.  New players Jssra, Del B., and Jake showed up, as did returning player Mike M.  We had several demos going on at once, and everyone had so much fun that I skipped my two hour lunch break and let this demo hour run three hours instead.  Greg, Jssra, Jake, and Mike expressed interest in attending the night's Whirlpool of Blood so they could get their own cards.  (Mike M. apparently lost part of his collection to water damage.)

Friday the 08th May 2009 @ 16:00 hours
Shadowfist Demonstration
Jake and Mike M. stuck around and played a three player demo new player Jason Y.  All of the players were having a great time.

Friday the 08th May 2009 @ 17:00 hours
Shadowfist Demonstration
Jake, Jason, and Mike M. stuck around and played a couple of two player demos with new player David S.  Great fun was had by all.

Friday the 08th May 2009 @ 19:00 hours
Whirlpool of Blood Swiss Draft Dueling Tournament
Despite the various new player's claims of interest in the night's draft tournament, only returning players James S., Ken S., Mike M., and Emilio R. showed up.  Needing something to eat and being tired, Ken and James left the tournament early.  This left Mike and Emilio to vie for the championship.  Mike won, and claimed a topless Sting of the Scorpion as his prize!

Saturday the 09th May 2009 @ 10:00 hours
Shadowfist Demonstration
No one showed up for Shadowfist, but the Vampire the Eternal Struggle TCG demos were going strong.  I chatted with the VtES coordinators, as I had once played back in the Jyhad days.

Saturday the 09th May 2009 @ 11:00 hours
Shadowfist Demonstration
New player Roy P. and returning player Mike M. played in a two-player demo.  Roy likes trying various games, but admitted that he has no intentions of picking up any collectible games.

Saturday the 09th May 2009 @ 12:00 hours
Whirlpool of Blood Swiss Draft Multiplayer Tournament
Like the previous night, only returning players James S., Ken S., and Mike M. showed up.  Mike won again, and claimed a topless Katie Kincaid as his prize!

Over all the convention went well. We reached 8 new players and 4 old players, with 5 of the 8 new players interested in picking up the game.  The whole convention seemed lightly populated, possibly due to a combination of its newness (several people told me beforehand that they won't attend a first year con as they want all of the bugs worked out first), people choosing to boycott it (due to the politics of its sponsor organization WesternSFA), and the economy.  Our over all numbers were higher than VtES, the only other ccg in the CCG and Game Library shared room.  Greg M., who demoed both ccgs over the course of the weekend, said that while he liked VtES, he felt that it just wasn't nearly as good as Shadowfist.

Phoenix Con Games 2008, the fourth annual regional gaming convention held in the Phoenix metropolitan area, included several Shadowfist events as I had previously posted to the Shadowfist Yahoo! Group.

Friday the 13th June 2008 @ 14:00 hours
Shadowfist Demonstration
In our first slot I ran one two player demo for new player Dillon and returning player Wayne.  Dillon had shown up to play in a Warlord CCG tournament, but was the only person other than the event coordinator who showed.  He seemed to enjoy the game, but wasn't interested in investing in another CCG outside of Warlord.

Saturday the 14th June 2008 @ 11:00 hours
Shadowfist Demonstration
For the first half of the time slot no one showed.  Then, thankfully, new player Janet came.  I had talked up Shadowfist at LepreCon XXXIV in Casa Grande, AZ, USA over Mother's Day Weekend, and she came to the demo at Phoenix Con Games as a result.  At the end of the timeslot, returning players Sean and Amanda showed up, to confirm with me when the Whirlpool of Blood tournament would be.

Saturday the 14th June 2008 @ 20:00 hours
Whirlpool of Blood: Sealed Draft, 3-Player, Tournament
The Game Emporium exhibitor's booth carried Daedalus Standard Edition starters in support.  Only returning player Mike M. showed up, but I told him to wait 10-15 minutes, as several people had told both me and Jeff of Game Emporium that they would be there.  10 minutes after start, Janet called my cell to tell me that she was running late, but was bringing a friend.  So, after a late start, I quickly taught new player Lisa-Marie the rules (which was a good refresher for Janet as well) then ran the tournament.

Players brought a sealed Standard deck and drafted from Throne War, Netherworld 2:  Back Through the Portals, Dark Future, Red Wedding, Two Fisted Tales of the Secret War, Shurikens & Six Guns, and Critical Shift boosters.  Because we started late, and because another event was scheduled immediately afterward, we ended up with a tie between newcomer Lisa-Marie and longtime player Mike.  Not very satisfying, but I gave both players a promo card anyway.  Mike took a Can of Whupass (card only) while Lisa-Marie took an alternate art Blade Palm.  Both Janet and Lisa-Marie left with playmats which I gave them, so they should be well on their way to being Shadowfist regulars.

Over all the convention went well. We reached 3 new players and 4 old players, with 2 of the 3 new players interested in picking up the game.  Game Emporium was able to sell thirteen Shadowfist decks, even if only four of those showed for the tournament (Mike purchased two sealed decks, one for the tournament and another for his collection).  The whole convention seemed lightly populated, possibly because of the economy.  Our numbers were comparable to other small press games at the con.  The convention includes an End of Game Feedback form on the back of the signup sheets, and here's some of the Player Comments submitted to the convention:

  • "Awesome game!  Paul was great!"
  • "great game, Paul!"
  • "Fantastic Game!"

Phoenix Con Games 2007, the third annual regional gaming convention held in the Phoenix metropolitan area, included several Shadowfist events as I had previously posted to the Shadowfist Yahoo! Group.

Friday the 15th June 2007 @ 09:00 hours
Shadowfist Demonstration
In our first slot I ran one two player demo for new player John and returning player BJ.  John had fun learning a new game (between his duties as a convention staff member), but admitted that he wasn't likely to ever purchase a collectible/trading game.

Friday the 15th June 2007 @ 11:00 hours
Both Guns Blazing: Constructed, 2-Player, Speed Tournament
BJ was the only player to show up, so he won an Elephant Gun by default.  Then the two of us played a game for fun.

Saturday the 16th June 2007 @ 19:00 hours
Whirlpool of Blood: Sealed Draft, 3-Player, Tournament
The Game Depot exhibitor's booth carried Daedalus Standard Edition starters in support.  However, of the five players who showed up, only Emilio brought a sealed deck for the tournament.  He won a Queen of the Ice Pagoda by default.

The five players who showed up for the tournament included returning players BJ, Emilio, Jay, and Jonathan, plus new player Gerardo, a friend of Emilio and Jonathan.  They proceeded to play a five player game, after I taught Gerardo the rules.  BJ won.  Jay left, leaving the four to play another round which new player Gerardo won.  Then another friend of Emilio, Gerardo, and Jonathan showed up, giving us another new player, Mario.  I taught Mario the game before they all played another five player game.  Gerardo won again, and afterward both he and Mario were assisted in constructing their own decks by their friends Emilio and Jonathan.  Between those decks and the playmats I gave them, they should be well on their way to being Shadowfist regulars. For winning the most games in our non-tournament, I awarded Gerardo his very own Mars Colonist.

Over all the convention went well. We reached 3 new players and 4 old players, with 2 of the 3 new players interested in picking up the game.  Game Depot was able to sell three Shadowfist decks, even if only one of those showed for the tournament.  Evenings seem to be better populated than mornings, which seems to follow the trend of previous conventions.

DarkCon 2007, the triannual local gaming & costuming convention held in the Phoenix metropolitan area, included several Shadowfist demos & tournaments the weekend of Thursday the 4th of January 2007 as I had previously posted to the Shadowfist Yahoo! Group.

Thursday 1pm-3pm (Demonstration)
No one showed up, and several other games in the same ballroom didn't have enough players to play either.

Thursday 3pm-5pm (Demonstration)
No one showed up, but at least the other games in the same ballroom started having enough players.

Thursday 6pm-10pm (100 Names Tournament)
Jay (who had played in demos at HexaCon last autumn) was the only one who showed up. We waited a bit, and after several minutes Trey showed up from another ballroom where there were too many players for the game he had signed up. He was willing to learn Shadowfist, but not play in a tournament. So first I helped him in a duel against Jay, then when he felt comfortable let him experience a multiplayer against both Jay and I. He seemed to like the game, and might be persuaded to play it again.

Friday 3pm-5pm (Demonstration)
There were a lot more people at the convention on Friday. We had Shadowfist regulars Emilio, James, Jonathan, & Ken, plus Frank from the last HexaCon. Frank had brought along his friend John, who watched the first round, then let us show him the ropes for the second round. The two three player games were Frank, Jonathan, & I plus Emilio, James, & Ken for the first round. The second round was Emilio, Frank, & Jonathan plus James, John, & Ken. John didn't really seem interested in the game from the start, so I don't think we'll see him again unless Frank keeps pushing the issue.

Friday 6pm-10pm (Market Square)
For the Market Square, players paid $5 for a Standard deck, Throne War booster, Netherworld 2: Back Through the Portals booster, Red Wedding booster, and Two-Fisted Tales of the Secret War booster. Returning players Alex, Emilio, Frank, and Jay were joined by Paul (Paul Brown, not me) who had remembered playing Shadowfist back when Jose and Robin were demonstrating the new game at GenCon! The last set Paul recalled was Netherworld 1, but he was ready to jump right in and play. With only five players, I had to convert the swiss plus final tournament from the announced multiplayer to dueling, as none of the others were qualified or even comfortable with judging so as to allow me to join in on the fun.

The first round saw Emilio (l) versus Frank (w), Jay (l) versus Paul (w), and Alex with the bye. The second round saw Alex versus Emilio (but they both wandered off, never to return), Frank (l) versus Paul (w), and Jay with the bye. The third round saw Frank (w) versus Jay (l) and Paul with the bye. Frank (w) and Paul (l) entered the final each with two wins, and Frank won with his deck which he named Dragon's Delight. I then allowed the players to divide up the remaining cards for their collections. When Emilio came back late that night, he was also allowed to retrieve his deck and his fair share of the remaining cards. Frank left the winner with his very own The Bazaar to add to his deck building pool.

Saturday 8am-12noon (Whirlpool of Blood)
No one showed for the first few hours (people staggered in between 9:30am-11:00am), and because those tables were in use starting at noon, I canceled the event. I was able to give Alex his cards (including the remainder left over from the tournament) which he had left the night before, but he wasn't interested and gave them to me.

Unscheduled Saturday 5pm-6pm (Pick-up Games)
Before the scheduled Both Guns Blazing tournament, Frank, James, Ken, and I played a pick-up game with Shadowfist regular Harley looking on. Shortly thereafter, Amanda (who had first been introduced to the game via Sean at Hexacon last autumn) and Shadowfist regular Sean showed up and played a duel which was cut short for the tournament.

Saturday 6pm-8pm (Both Guns Blazing)
We had a great turn out for this tournament, with returning players Frank & James, Shadowfist regulars Harley & Sean, and relative newcomer Amanda. We started the tournament with Frank (l) versus James (w), Harley (w) versus Sean (l), and Amanda with a bye. Next we saw Amanda (l) versus James (w). Frank was about to take the bye, but Paul showed up late and joined in on the fun. After Frank (l) versus Paul (w) we saw Harley (l) versus James (w) and Amanda (l) versus Sean (w). Finally, we saw Frank (l) versus Harley (w) and James (w) versus Paul (l). James was the winner both in terms of number of games played and number of wins, having been undefeated with his deck named Paradox Nexus. Frank was the winner with the greatest number of losses, have lost every match-up of the entire tournament! James left with his very own copy of Public Enemy No. 1, which he was in everyone's eyes.

After the tournament, Amanda, Frank, Paul, and Sean purchased decks which had been intended for the cancelled Whirlpool of Blood to help them build decks. Paul actually bought several, as he intended to introduce his family to the game. His daughter was watching his tournament play and being instructed in the game by me between my judging duties. She left with several playmats, so I think we'll be seeing a few more players added.

Tangental Saturday Late Night (Dark One's Party)
The only game dealer in the dealer's room approached me and asked for an explanation as to why he's always asked for Shadowfist at the cons, but he couldn't sell it for years when he had a game store (he's now an online only retailer). After explaining the benefits of Shadowfist to a non-TCG player, I promised him that he could contact me by email or phone to ask if I would be running any Shadowfist for any particular local convention. So, hopefully we have a new Shadowfist retailer.

Sunday 10am-3pm (Final Brawl)
Unlike the previous multiplayer swiss plus final tournament, we had enough players to leave the tournament as advertised. Vying for the prize were Emilio, Frank, Harley, James, Jonathan, & Ken. The first round was Emilio (l), Frank (w), & Harley (l) plus James (w), Jonathan (l), & Ken (l). The second round was Frank (l), James (l), & Harley (w) plus Emilio (l), Jonathan (l), & Ken (w). The third round was Frank (l), Harley (l), & Ken (w) plus Emilio (l), James (l), & Jonathan (w). The finals saw Frank (l), James (w), & Ken (l) battle, with James' Paradox Nexus deck winning again. He popped open his Can of Whupass: Old Skool Edition for everyone to see, then went upstairs and had Special Guest Liz Danforth sign the Jack Donovan card (which she was more than happy to do, of course).

Tangental Sunday 7:30pm-8:00pm (Post-Con Hotel Happy Hour)
Sean asked for help constructing an Ascended deck from the cards he and Amanda had bought that weekend. He's misplaced his old decks which the late Michael Lee Jackson had made for him. So we quickly built him a generic deck, with promises to help him again if it didn't playtest well. Amanda was ready to fall asleep after that, otherwise I could have helped her build a quick Eaters of the Lotus deck as well.

Over all, I'd say that Shadowfist was successful at DarkCon 2007. We had ten returning players, two new players, and one player reintroduced to the game after almost a decade (who will be introducing the game to several others in the near future. It looks like it's not worth running Shadowfist before 6pm Thursday or Friday, nor is it worth running Shadowfist before 10am Saturday or Sunday. Most of the weekend Living Arcanis took one of the three tables Shadowfist was scheduled, and like other conventions I only needed that third table two times. The times that third table is needed seem to vary depending on what Shadowfist is scheduled opposite, and thus unpredictable pre-con. So far I've refused to use the most current booster set at conventions in the hopes that I don't conflict with dealer sales, and it's not worked yet. However, hopefully that too will change.

Winning deck builds will be posted shortly.

The weekend of the 12th-15th of October 2006 was HexaCon XVI in Phoenix, AZ, USA. As Arizona's longest running gaming convention, I ran a series of Shadowfist demonstrations, as recorded earlier.

One of the players, Frank, took a few pictures Sunday morning which he was willing to share:
Thanks, Frank, for taking and sharing the pictures. We should have taken a picture of you in the action as well!

Hexacon XVI Shadowfist Demos

HexaCon XVI was a small local gaming convention in the Phoenix, Arizona, USA area held the weekend of Friday the 13th. I had mentioned previously on the Shadowfist Yahoo! Group  that I did not have a schedule of my events before con to post there, and that would be because they made the schedule for each day each morning of the convention. Despite that (and scheduling my Shadowfist demos opposite my LARP troupe's events), Shadowfist demos were one of the most successful events of the weekend.

Friday 2pm-4pm
We had two new players (Joshua and Sal) and one player who vaguely recalled playing it back in the Daedalus days (Jay).

Saturday 6pm-8pm
We finally had enough players for two tables of action. We had two long time local Shadowfist players (Ken and James), one player who usually plays in all of the convention run Shadowfist demos or tournaments (Emilio), two players who last played when the late Michael Jackson was running local Shadowfist events (c. RW) (Frank and Daniel), and one player who had been a store demo person back in the Daedalus days, but was unaware of anything past Flashpoint (Paul, no relation).

impromptu Sunday midnight-1am
I dueled against Jay, whose demo on Friday was a multiplayer against his friends.

Sunday 2pm-6pm
We had three tables of demo action! At table one we had returning players Daniel, Frank, James, and Ken. At table two we had returning players Emilio and Jonathan, longtime local player Wayne, and new player BJ. At table three, showing up around 3pm we had occasional convention player Sean and new player Amanda.

Everyone had fun. I gave out free boosters from TW, N2, and TFT for each demo played, as well as free greyscale printouts of Stefan's Shadowfist Playmat and the card anatomy diagram from page 11 of the YotD rule book. I promoted the new expansion SGS (available from Game Depot locally) as well as the demos and tournaments I'll be running for DarkCon 2007. Many of the players commented about picking up the game from Game Depot, as well as how Shadowfist would make it worthwhile for them to attend DarkCon. Viva Shadowfist!

All in all, HexaCon XVI broke down to 4 new players introduced to the game, four old players reintroduced to the game, and six regular players who still enjoy playing the game.

Phoenix Con Games 2006, the second annual regional gaming convention held in the Phoenix metropolitan area, included several Shadowfist demos: http://www.conevents.com/page/event/phx_event.asp?EID=1316

In our first slot I ran two three player demos for five new players, and one player who hadn't played in a few years. Of those six, only the returning player and three of the new players wanted their free boosters after the event. The other two new players enjoyed the game, but weren't interested in making an investment to play and passed their boosters to one of the other new players.

In our second slot I ran one four player demo for one player who had heard of Shadowfist years ago but never players, and three youths whose father looked but didn't join the fun. All four enjoyed the game and kept their boosters.

In our third slot I ran one three player demo for two new players and the returning player from the first slot, and when a fourth showed up mid-game I joined him in a demo duel. All four enjoyed their games, and all but one of the new players were interested in their free boosters.

The fourth slot was Sunday afternoon and unattended. After waiting an hour and a half I went home, the convention only having a half hour left.

Over all I believe our demos went well. We reached 12 new players and 1 old player, with 9 of the 12 new players interested in picking up the game. The convention includes an End of Game Feedback form on the back of the signup sheets, and here's some of the Player Comments submitted to the convention:

  • "Game was very enjoyable, easy to learn"
  • "Great Refresher course! Very Enjoyable"
  • "Fun Demo - Very Knowledgeable regarding the game."
  • "Good person to run a demo. Enthusiastic + wants to get people
    involved"
  • "Good Demo. Good Card Flavor. Nice Themed Decks"
  • "Lots of Fun - GM Knows His Stuff - Probably Going to Get It"
